Life in the Fast Lane

Life in the Fast Lane -
I just recently moved from small town MN to the big city. I am a student at FIT loving the fact that everyday I am learning something new, and expanding my knowledge when it comes to the industry. As an aspiring PR girl I am determined to gain as much experience as I can. Living in one of the fashion capitols of the world I am truly inspired by anyone and everyone I see. I have never met so many creative, free-willed, and ambitious people. Everything about this environment is so motivating to me, and just proves there is no doubts when it comes to my dreams. Starting my journey in NYC is a dream come true, and I want to share my experiences with everyone. You'll have to bare with me when it comes to my pictures, the iPhone is all I have until my birthday (fingers crossed a new camera is coming soon).

Life in NYC

Jessica Teves (Managing Editor of Refinery 29)

Tonight I went to the event Fashion From 4 Perspectives hosted by College Fashionista at NYU. I found it to be so beneficial and inspiring hearing all the advice from the panelists! They shared with all of us inspiring "fashionistas" their experience of getting into the industry along with all kinds of additional advice. They all are so passionate about what they do, and being able to see that passion is something I find to be so inspiring. At the end of the event I was excited to able to meet Jessica Teves the managing editor of Refinery 29 (pictured above). She was so kind and gave me great advice on starting out in internships. One of my favorite things she said during the event was "always stay loyal to yourself, and never give up." I found myself to instantly build up this sense of energy and motivation to start working my way towards my future career. There is so much to learn about the fashion industry. I am ready to do whatever I can to expand my knowledge and experiences! Call me crazy, but sometimes I wish I could just skip college and jump right into my career. I can't wait to wake up everyday and be doing what I love! Just like Jessica.

**One other thing I loved that she said, and people that know me personally will get a kick out of this one. Every morning she makes sure to get in a good work out. I definitely can relate to that!!! Nothing better then a fresh start to your morning.

The beginning of this week I decided to take a walk around the city. I ended up in West Village, and when I was down Perry St. I stumbled upon a vintage store called Geminola. After doing some research I found Geminola is a one of a kind 1950's inspired vintage clothing store established by british designer Lorraine Kirke. I find everything about the 50's to be so beautiful, and I think that is really what caught my attention in the store. The detailing on each fabric was so exquisite, and I love the fact that each piece has different approach to the modern day style.

Check out this link of Geminola from Vintage Fashion Directory, and if you watch the video you will be able to preview some of Geminola's apparel.

Also check out Geminola's site, which is coming soon!

One thing I love about walking around in the city is all the high fashion window displays. Everything from the different styles to detailing in each piece is breath taking, and a true work of art. You immediately have to stop and turn your head when you walk by (warning can be dangerous in large crowds). While looking at each display I feel a sense of motivation because I know one day my hard work will allow me to be surrounded by these luxurious pieces everyday.

After living here for a month I have met a lot of people who know so much about the high end designers and labels. Sometimes I'll be honest it makes me feel so far behind, but then I realize that is just not how I grew up in MN. I never owned anything by Chanel, YSL, Alexander McQueen ect., but I have always been drawn to the energy of high fashion, the history behind it, and the beauty it protrays. There is a lot I still have to experience, but that is why I am here because it truly fascinates me. I want to learn in anyway I can, and form that path towards something I am truly passionate about. I know one day I will be working with some the most extraordinary pieces designed by some of the most inspirational people.

Please don't confuse me for cocky, simply determined.

*What looks like a building reflection in the window is actually the design of the dress.

Tonight I went with my roommate to different art galleries in the Chelsea Neighborhood. I have always wanted to do something like this, and it was a great experience. One of the main reasons I liked it so much besides all the beautiful art pieces (and the free wine), was the people watching! I would catch myself forgetting to focus on the art, and admiring all the different fashions around me. I love the fact that much like this lady people aren't afraid to express their creativity. She stood out like a sore thumb, but I am not kidding you it was awesome! You couldn't help but turn your head when you saw her twenties inspired style with a modern twist. These are the people who make fashion unique, and memorable.

I just put these three beautiful pictures up on the wall in my room. The entire area is all white, and quite frankly, really boring! I am happy I have these to add some color and of course style! What I love most about these pictures though is that they were actually my best friend Megan's. I remember how excited she was when she got them for her dorm room at school. When I came to visit her back at the beginning of February they were one of the first things she showed me! I love that I can walk into my room now and instantly be greeted by a little piece of Megan. It is just another reminder that no matter where I am she is always with me.

First week living in NY and I am loving it. This morning I went for a run on the High Line, which I must add is beautiful. So many different people and the scenery is breath taking. I could have ran for hours if the sun wasn't beaming on me (note to self don't wear a big black basketball t-shirt in August). I unexpectedly passed Diane Von Furstenberg and I was in complete awh! Call me crazy, but I had to stop allowing myself to take in this moment! Such a dream of mine it is to work in that office. I may be a small town girl, but let me tell you I am determined to work hard and do WHATEVER it takes. Even if that means starting out as cleaning the bathrooms, as long as I get my foot in the door that is all I need.
